Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 500 g minced meat (mixed)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, chopped
- 1 egg
- 100 g breadcrumbs
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tsp paprika powder (sweet)
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp mustard
- 2 Table spoons of milk
For the filling:
- 200 g grated Emmental or Gouda
- 150g cooked ham, cut into thin slices
- 1 bunch of fresh parsley, finely chopped
For the sauce:
- 400 g strained tomatoes
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
- Prepare dough:
- In a large bowl, mix together the ground meat, finely chopped onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, paprika powder, oregano, mustard and milk.
- Knead the mixture into a homogeneous dough.
- Roll out dough:
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle about 0.5 cm thick.
- Place filling:
- Spread the grated cheese on the dough, leaving some space around the edges.
- Spread the thin slices of ham evenly over the cheese.
- Sprinkle the chopped parsley on top.
- Form a roll:
- Gently roll up the dough from the longer side to form a long roll.
- Place the roll on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
- Prepare the sauce:
- In a saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, sugar, dried basil, dried thyme, salt and pepper.
- Bring the sauce to the boil briefly and then simmer over low heat until it has thickened slightly.
- Bake:
- Pour the prepared sauce over the minced meat and cheese roll.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 30-35 minutes until the roll is golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve:
- Take the minced meat and cheese roll out of the oven and let it rest briefly.
- Cut into slices and arrange on plates.
- Drizzle with tomato sauce and garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
