Puff pastry squares: the quick recipe for a tasty appetizer

Ingredients

  • 1 roll of puff pastry (rectangular)
  • 1 egg (for brushing)
  • Sesame or poppy seeds (for decoration, optional)

Sweet Fillings (optional)

  • Jam or marmalade
  • Nutella or other chocolate cream
  • Apples cut into small pieces and mixed with sugar and cinnamon

Savory fillings (optional)

  • Ham and cheese
  • Spinach and ricotta
  • Dried tomatoes and mozzarella
  • Prepare the puff pastry:
    • Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
    • Unroll the puff pastry on a lightly floured work surface.
  • Cut the squares:
    • Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into squares measuring approximately 6-8cm on each side. You can make larger or smaller squares depending on your preference and type of filling.
  • Stuff the squares (optional):
    • If you want to fill the squares, place a small amount of filling in the center of half the squares. Make sure not to overdo the filling to prevent it from leaking out during cooking.
    • Cover with the remaining squares and seal the edges well by pressing with a fork. Alternatively, you can fold each square in half to form a triangle.
  • Brush and decorate:
    • In a bowl, beat the egg and brush the surface of the puff pastry squares.
    • If desired, sprinkle the squares with sesame or poppy seeds for a decorative touch.
  • Cook the squares:
    • Arrange the squares on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until the squares are puffed and golden.
