Grandma’s apple pie with vanilla pudding – a traditional family recipe

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 250 g flour
  • 125 g soft butter
  • 100 g sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla sugar

For covering:

  • 4-5 apples (depending on size)
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 packet of vanilla pudding powder
  • 500 ml milk
  • 50 g sugar

For the crumbles:

  • 50 g flour
  • 50 g sugar
  • 50 g cold butter

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C top/bottom heat. Lightly grease a baking pan (approx. 26 cm diameter) or line it with baking paper.
  2. For the dough, place the flour, softened butter, sugar, egg, baking powder, a pinch of salt and vanilla extract or vanilla sugar in a large bowl.
  3. Knead the ingredients into a smooth dough. If the dough is too dry, you can add a little milk.
  4. Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan so that the bottom is covered and a small edge is created.
  5. For the topping, peel, core and cut the apples into thin slices. Sprinkle with the juice of half a lemon to prevent browning.
  6. Distribute the apple slices evenly over the dough base in the baking pan.
  7. For the vanilla pudding, pour about 100 ml of milk into a cup and stir the pudding powder until smooth.
  8. Heat the remaining milk in a saucepan and add the sugar. Once the milk is hot, pour in the mixed pudding powder while stirring.
  9. Bring the pudding to the boil, stirring constantly, until it thickens.
  10. Pour the hot vanilla pudding over the apple slices in the baking pan and spread it evenly.
  11. For the crumble, put the flour and sugar in a bowl. Add the cold butter in small pieces.
  12. Using your fingers or a food processor, work the butter into the dry ingredients until crumbly.
  13. Spread the crumbles evenly over the vanilla pudding.
  14. Bake the apple pie with vanilla custard in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes or until the crumbles are golden brown and crispy.
  15. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool slightly before removing it from the tin.
  16. Serve Grandma’s Apple Cake with Vanilla Pudding warm or at room temperature. It tastes especially good with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a portion of fresh whipped cream.

This Grandma’s Apple Cake with Vanilla Custard is a classic family recipe that combines the delicious taste of apples with the creamy sweetness of vanilla custard. Enjoy it as a dessert after a hearty meal or as a sweet treat with coffee or tea. Enjoy!
