Italian Donuts: An Easy Recipe That Will Surprise Everyone!

Ingredients:

  • 300 g of 00 flour (plus extra for the pastry board)
  • 100 g of sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 80 g of melted and cooled butter
  • Grated zest of 1 lemon
  • Preparation of the dough:
    • In a large bowl, mix the sifted flour with the baking powder and a pinch of salt.
    • Add the sugar, the lightly beaten eggs, the cooled melted butter and the grated lemon zest.
    • Mix all the ingredients with a spoon until you get a smooth dough.
  • Processing the dough:
    • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead vigorously with your hands for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Add a little flour if the dough is too sticky.
  • Donut formation:
    • Divide the dough into small walnut-sized balls.
    • With each ball, form a stick about 15-20 cm long and join the ends to form a donut. Press the ends well to seal them.
  • Frying the donuts:
    • Heat plenty of peanut oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat (about 170-180°C).
    • Fry the donuts a few at a time, turning them gently with a slotted spoon to brown them evenly on both sides. This will take about 2-3 minutes for each side.
  • Draining and finishing:
    • Once golden, transfer the donuts to a plate lined with paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Service:
    • Dust the donuts with powdered sugar, if desired, and let them cool slightly before serving.
  • 1 sachet of baking powder (16 g)
  • 1 pinch of salt
